National Trails Day on Mount Sutro

June 6, 2018

We had a fun and productive event celebrating National Trails Day on Mount Sutro this past Saturday! Thank you to all of our volunteers, sponsors: REI, UCSF, Fort Point, and partners: Bay Area Ridge Trail, SF Urban Riders, and SF Parks Alliance for making this event a success.

60 volunteers worked on projects including a trail realignment to improve an eroded and steep section of trail, trail maintenance efforts for drainage and tread improvement, hauling materials like logs and gravel for trail building support, habitat restoration weeding, and more! The realignment is nearly complete and should be finished after one or two more Saturdays - sign up to volunteer!

The projects took place primarily in and around Rotary Meadow at the Mount Sutro summit. Rotary Meadow is a 15 year old habitat restoration project on Mount Sutro and was made possible by a large grant from the Rotary Club of San Francisco. Stay tuned for a blog about Rotary Meadow next month!

Following a sunny and hot morning of volunteering, we wrapped up the trail projects, cleaned our tools, and headed down to the Aldea Center for lunch and raffle. We happily sat down to rest, refuel, and refresh after all of our hard work! A big thank you to Fort Point for donating beer to help us cheers and celebrate National Trails Day.

Plus, REI presented us with this giant check! This is a $10,000 grant award for the final phase of the Clarendon Trailhead. REI has contributed grant funds to many trail projects on Mount Sutro over the years, and we are so thankful for their continued support of local outdoor recreation and our stewardship programs. For an update on trailhead progress, read this blog about what we're up to!

Join us for trail and habitat projects every month on 1st & 3rd Saturdays 9am-1pm to pitch in and get your hands (and hat) dirty!

Thanks again to our National Trails Day Sponsors: REI, UCSF, Fort Point Beer Co.

and Partners: Bay Area Ridge Trail, San Francisco Urban Riders, San Francisco Parks Alliance
