Help Us Reach Our Year-End Fundraising Goal!
Despite our near-death experience this year from the collapse of our fiscal sponsor, the San Francisco Parks Alliance, we were still able to host 4,500 volunteer hours, reopen the Northridge trail and plant over 4,000 plants. The collapse is a story of betrayal, theft and miraculous, hard-won revival, for community groups, including Sutro Stewards. Our community of Stewards came to our rescue and we were able to get back on our feet in June, with Livable City as our new fiscal sponsor, but we are still not out of the weeds. Full recovery means we are able to hire back an Outreach and Programs Coordinator laid off in June, restart our internship program, and fully steward over five acres of habitat sites and five miles of trails on Mount Sutro.
We have big dreams for 2026 including training fifteen youth to become certified naturalists, relaunching our Urban Ecology Internship program and using process based restoration to improve the hydrology of Woodland Canyon Creek.
Please support us as we stabilize and look towards bright horizons in 2026!
Sutro Stewards works to conserve habitat through ecological restoration and native plant propagation while providing recreational opportunities in the UCSF Mount Sutro Open Space Reserve. Mount Sutro Open Space, located in the geographic center of San Francisco, was overlooked by surrounding communities for more than a century. Over the past 20 years, the true value of the open space has been revealed through the Sutro Stewards’ creation of multi-use trails, allowing the public to explore this exceptional place.

Since 2006, we have mobilized volunteers to build and maintain trails, remove invasive species, and grow and install native plants. We are the largest organized independent volunteer pool in San Francisco, engaging over 3,000 volunteers each year and hosting six or more events each month.
We work with city agencies and land managers to continue to expand the network of connectivity between San Francisco open spaces and engage the community in the planning of improvements and long-term stewardship of each project.

Your generous support of our ongoing programs will...

-
Build community for conservation through hands-on stewardship and environmental education
-
Maintain Mount Sutro's 4.5-mile recreational trail system and habitat restoration sites
-
Increase biodiversity and expand wildlife habitat
-
Uncover and restore Woodland Canyon Creek on Mount Sutro
-
Provide the healing powers of nature to underserved communities
-
Offer paid youth internships and education
-
Support our vision for connectivity between adjacent open spaces
In times of uncertainty, supporting your backyard open space is a powerful agent of change you can see. When you donate to Sutro Stewards you are directly protecting and enhancing Mount Sutro, allowing city residents to connect to nature, increasing local biodiversity and improving resilience to climate change.
