Rainwater Catchment & Rain Garden

Sutro Stewards has been awarded a Community Challenge Grant from the City of San Francisco for an exciting new project in the Nursery!

This August we will begin work with Urban Farmer to construct a rainwater catchment system at the Nursery that will collect rainwater and fog drip from the pot washing station roof. We will be installing a tank that can store just over 500 gallons of water. The additional water will be used washing pots and watering a new rain garden! In addition to rainwater catchment, a new habitat garden will be installed between the Nursery and the new Clarendon Trail. The garden will be planted with hundreds of native plants from the nursery and watered with greywater from the pot washing station, utilizing the rainwater a second time. The area will be mulched and straw wattles installed to prevent erosion of the hillside. We will also be designing and installing informational signs to educate the public about rainwater catchment.

There are opportunities for YOU to be involved. Keep an eye out for special work days announcements, join us on this exciting new project! For more information contact liza@sutrostewards.org.
